"Avatar" aka "Project 880" ist ein SciFi-Projekt von James Cameron (u.a. "Titanic", "Terminator", "Aliens", "Abyss" und "Battle Angel Alita") ...
2100 A.D.
Der verkrüppelte Ex-Soldat Jake (Sam Worthington, u.a.

[...] Speaking of Cameron, Worthington told ComingSoon.net that he is excited for the theatrical re-release, but that he isn't sure what's going to be included in the eight minutes of additional footage:
"I wish we added eight hours. I think the first cut I saw was about six hours long... There's a couple of extra hunting scenes. There's a much-speculated and blogged sex scene everyone keeps f--king harping on about. To be honest, I think everyone's going to be disappointed that's it's not blue porn... But there's a lot of other character parts. Giovanni [Ribisi] stuff and Stephen Lang stuff. So it's up to Jim. I know Jim would only release it if it enhanced the story by putting it back in."
Additionally, there's a number of scenes that took place on Earth that were ultimately excised from the final cut:
"We shot all that. When we first saw all that, it didn't [work]. You just want to get to the planet. It's kind of a slow burn. Jim always wanted it to be a slow burn start so that you would adjust to your eyes and adjust the world, but it because too much of slow burn. It was like, "hurry the f--k up, man."
Meanwhile, Avatar's future may not yet be on the schedule, but Worthington thinks it won't be long before thing start moving forward:
"Avatar 2 will be whenever Jim decides to write it. I think he's in Thailand at the moment or trying to save the Gulf. But I'm sure he's going to put pen to paper soon." [...]

CS! meldet... Talking about 3D at a technology forum in Seoul, South Korea, James Cameron said that he estimates it will take about three years to make the Avatar sequel. That's 18 months less than it took the first.
He said that the release date for the follow-up will be announced in a few months.
Cameron previously revealed that the sequel would focus on Pandora's ocean. "I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well," he said.
The first film has earned a massive $2.718 billion worldwide and has sold more than 19.7 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in three weeks.
[12.05.2010]
Reuters.com meldet... Avatar" has sold 19.7 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in three weeks, more than any other film has ever sold in that span, the studio 20th Century Fox said on Tuesday.
The fantasy blockbuster's closest competitor, the 2008 Batman sequel "The Dark Knight," sold about 16 million copies in its first three weeks in stores.
"Avatar" was released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 22.
The movie from director James Cameron already holds the record for the biggest film release at global box offices with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales.
About 80 percent of its box office gross came from 3-D screenings of the film. Fox plans to release a 3-D version of "Avatar" on DVD sometime next year.

MarketSaw meldete kürzlich... [...] AVATAR 2 will continue several years after the events of the original. It will also lay the groundwork for the other moons in the system. Things are going to get quite "weird" to the point of becoming somewhat abstract! Each movie will stand on its own and there will definitely be NO shooting the sequels back to back. Trilogy? Actually no. The sky is no limit for this universe - the plot lines are endless.

[...] We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well. [...]

[16.04.2010]
CS! sprach mit dem Produzenten Jon Landau, u.a. über das Sequel... [...] "Look, I think one of the things that we have been successful at is that the most pressure we feel is our own pressure," he told us. "I think that's true as we make a movie, whether it be 'Titanic' or 'Avatar.' Our pressure about an 'Avatar' sequel is self-imposed. We've always said that if the public wanted a sequel that we would do a sequel. That having been said, in my opinion, Jim has done two sequels in his career, and both times, he has at least equaled if not surpassed the original movie. We're only going to do it when we have a piece of material, a script, that we believe will be at least as entertaining and unique as the first movie was."
Then again, once they get that material--and Landau agreed that the possibilities for a sequel are somewhat endless--making a sequel will likely be a lot easier than it was to make the first movie. "Not only that, but the hard part is out of the way. We figured out how to do it, and our goal in the next one is to do it more cost-effectively and more time-efficiently, and we have kept on a team of our technical staff who is working right now on Gen 2 of what we did, but with all the experience that we've had. We kept them on, and they're working for us right now."
Over the next few months, Landau and Cameron will be overseeing production on the supplementary materials for the four-disc ultimate edition Avatar Blu-ray out in November, many of which will appear in the months between releases through "The Avatar Program," which will allow those who buy the initial DVD release exclusive access to the materials at Avatarmovie.com.
Eventually, the Blu-ray will include a brand-new two-hour documentary on making Avatar and unused extra scenes from the movie, including more on the Na'vi school run by Sigourney Weaver and on Jake's training as an Avatar. With that in mind, we wondered how much time Cameron might have to start developing new material.
"The good news is that we have systems and methodologies in place that will not consume a lot of Jim's time," Landau said. "I think Jim's time will be surgical coming in. We have a very good behind-the-scenes crew working on this two-hour documentary we want to put together - Jim's not doing it himself. We have Weta Digital working on these shots, but our animation supervisor is now our visual FX supervisor, so he'll take all of this to a certain point and then Jim will be able to come in, but hopefully, he'll be able to go off and do some other stuff. There are a small number of movies that Jim wants to (direct) himself, but he doesn't want to say that he can do things that he's not going to have time for, and we know that whatever movie he does is not going to be done in six months." [...]

Yahoo! Movies meldet... Sam Worthington says the staggering worldwide success of "Avatar," over $2.5 billion at the box office, makes him wonder if multiple sequels will be made - and the Australian actor said he'd work with director James Cameron again for just "a bucket of fish."
"I'm starting to think we're going to do 'Avatar 3, 4, 5'" Sam told Access Hollywood's Billy Bush at the ShoWest Awards in Las Vegas on Thursday. "But that's the thing, we're only going to do it if Jim can find someone to challenge him because he's not the type of guy that just dives in lightly."
The 33-year-old actor said the innovative director could bring another groundbreaking technique to the sequels.
"Jim will only do a movie if it's a challenge for him and if he can revolutionize something," he told Billy. "I know with Jim, he has to find his own personal challenge on it. So we'll wait and see."
And Sam said he's onboard for whatever Jim asks of him - and he'll do it for close to nothing.
"I signed for a couple [of sequels] but I'll work with Jim for a bucket of fish," Sam joked. [...]

USA Today sprach mit James Cameron... Q: [...] When is Avatar coming out in 3D on Blu-ray?
A: We're not officially announcing it right now but I'm hoping for fall. The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing the movie this fall. It's kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of Alice in Wonderland. The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result. The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We're going to assess that. We're talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative. [...] The weird thing about working with Jim is you become so submerged, so to speak, in the world, you become so obsessed with it, and this is going to sound really silly, part of you can't imagine that everybody else will not be as obsessed as you are with it when they finally get to see it. Part of you is like, "Oh my God, this is the most wonderful world to visit," I mean, to a point where it gets to your detriment where you're watching the four-hour cut and you're like, "This is great!" You're thinking, "I want to stay here for four hours!" which is not really realistic. Simultaneously, part of you is thinking, "I feel this way because I'm too close. I'm too close, I'm too close, I'm too close. I'm too invested in every little detail. I care too much about the characters." I think the only person who doesn't second guess himself is Jim. Jim is the one who frankly can keep the boat on course while everyone around him... you follow him like the General that he is, because you believe in him. I would be truthful in saying that I believed in Jim more than I believed in the movie, just because he's a very inspirational figure and person for me. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was totally obsessed and will continue to be obsessed with that damn planet." [...]

CS! sprach mit James Cameron... ComingSoon.net: When you started writing the script for "Avatar" 15 years ago, did you have a vision for where the sequels would go?
James Cameron: No, but a lot of ideas for the sequels kind of evolved out of writing the story for "Avatar." Anything that we designed, ideas that we had, if we couldn't figure out how to put them in the movie we said "We'll stick it in the sequel," so we have a big backlog of ideas.
CS: How many sequels will there be?
Cameron: I don't know.
CS: Do you know where the story is going for the next film?
Cameron: Yeah, I definitely have a story arc in mind for the second film and even on a very vague base for a third film. That doesn't mean we'll do a third film - it doesn't mean we'll stop at a third film. We'll just have to see where it goes.
CS: Will the sequel be the next movie you do or will it be another project?
Cameron: That hasn't been decided yet.

James Cameron's Avatar passed up the filmmaker's own Titanic at the domestic box office on Tuesday to claim that crown as well. Avatar reached $601,141,551 after 47 days to pass up the $600,788,188 that Titanic earned its entire run.
Internationally, Avatar had already passed up Titanic's $1,242,413,080, and now stands at $1,446,989,293.
Worldwide, Avatar has brought in $2,048,130,844 so far, while Titanic earned $1,843,201,268 total.

THR.com meldet... News Corp. is in very early talks with James Cameron about a possible "Avatar" sequel.
Asked about potential "Avatar" sequels, chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch said on his quarterly earnings call Tuesday that the conglomerate is in "very early talks about it." Director James Cameron "has ideas" for a sequel, he said, adding: "We will be pushing for one."
But he cautioned analysts not to "hold your breath for an early one" in a possible reference to Cameron projects often taking a long time to come to fruition.
News Corp. deputy chairman, president and COO Chase Carey interjected that both sides want to make another movie. "We certainly both intend to have one," he said.
The executives said financing of a sequel like of any movies these days would be key as News Corp. likes to lay off risk, especially since Cameron films tend to go over budget. But given the success of "Avatar," financing details could come together.
Management also said 60% or more of the profit from "Avatar" will come in over the next two quarters, adding the firm will continue its theater run as the boxoffice goes well, with a DVD release also planned soon after the theatrical run. A DVD release date hasn't been announced so far.
Pushed further on details about the DVD plans for "Avatar," Murdoch said it will be released during his company's current fiscal year, which ends June 30. But he also highlighted that it won't be a 3D DVD release as that technology isn't developed enough yet. But Carey added there could be a 3D "Avatar" DVD release further "down the road" when the technology is ready.

Variety.com berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse... [...] Entering its seventh frame at the domestic box office, 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" again proved its staying power, taking in an estimated $30 million. James Cameron's pic easily surpassed the No. 2 film, Warner Bros.' Mel Gibson starrer "Edge of Darkness," which opened with $17.1 million.
"Avatar's" domestic intake has reached $594.5 million, combined with $1.45 billion internationally, for a worldwide cume that has passed the $2 billion mark.
Last weekend, the film passed "Titanic" in foreign revenues. "Avatar" became the all-time highest grosser worldwide as of Jan. 25, leaving only the domestic figure to beat. Cameron's 3D phenom still remains just a few strokes behind the $600.8 million domestic benchmark set by "Titanic" in 1998, but given last week's daily average of $3.18 million, Fox said the pic should beat "Titanic" some time midweek. CS! berichtet über die US-Einspielergebnisse... [...] It has now been seven weeks since James Cameron's Avatar began its unstoppable run of the box office, not allowing a single other movie to supplant its placement at the top of the heap. That continued unabated as the FX-heavy sci-fi fantasy epic added another estimated $30 million to its haul, down just 14% from last weekend. It has grossed nearly $594 million domestically with its international gross having crossed the $2 billion mark over the weekend. Having already taken the international gross crown away from Titanic last week, it's edging closer to the $600 million grossed by Cameron's previous movie, which has been resting atop the domestic gross record book unhindered for 12 years. Avatar should pass it on Monday or Tuesday and the question now is where will its final box office tally end up, being that it's likely to remain in IMAX and 3D theaters for at least another month?
