Ende des dritten Jahrtausends... Die Gewalt an den Schulen hat Oberhand genommen, der Staat steht kurz vor dem Kollaps. Eine Erziehungsreform fur boykottierende Schuler soll Abhilfe leisten: "Battle Royale" - die königliche Schlacht findet auf einer einsamen Insel statt, überwacht von bewaffneten Truppen. Die Regeln sind einfach, aber von tödlicher Konsequenz... 1. Die Schlacht dauert drei Tage 2. Jeder Teilnehmer wird mit Essen, Wasser and einer Waffe ausgestattet 3. Es gibt kein Entkommen 4. Nur einer darf überleben! Ausserdem wird jedem Schüler ein Halsband umgebunden, das explodiert falls er die Teilnahme verweigert. Die Situation für die unfreiwilligen Krieger erscheint ausweglos, sie müssen sich gegenseitg töten. Denn wenn mehr als einer überlebt werden alle exekutiert... In der Rolle des Lehrers Kitano glänzt Takeshi Kitano (u.a. "Zatoichi"), neben den zahlreichen jungen Darstellern wie Tatsuya Fujiwara als Shuya Nanahara, Aki Maeda als Noriko Nakagawa und Chiaki Kuriyama (u.a. "Kill Bill - Vol. 1") als Takako Chigusa... Die Terrorgruppe "The Wild Seven" verübte bereits eine Reihe von opferreichen Anschlägen. Die Regierung reagiert mit einem neuen Programm namens "Battle Royale 2" und schickt 42 Schüler, die "The Wild Seven" in ihrer Inselfestung angreifen sollen... New Line Cinema has bought the remake rights to the controversial Japanese sci-fi film Battle Royale and set up the project with Neal Moritz and Roy Lee, reports Variety. The original film, produced by Toie and released in 2000 amid concerns about its violence, is set in an apocalyptic future in which schools are overrun by uncontrolled violence; the government responds by organizing an annual Battle Royale, in which a school class is picked at random and students are pitted against each other on an abandoned island in a game of survival. Toie also produced a sequel in 2003, Battle Royale II -- Requiem, in which a new class of teen students are forced to battle a rebel group let by a survivor of a previous Battle Royale. [...] Last month in Tokyo, Kenta Fukasaku screened an extended version of Battle Royale II, which adds about 20 minutes worth of footage originally cut from the film. There's some added character development (which the original cut was in dire need of) as well as extended battle scenes, and reportedly those in attendance liked the improvements (though I guess the people who would put themselves through BRII a second time must've liked the original cut in the first place). Kenta Fukasaku is trying to get a theatrical release for this Special Version (re-titled "Battle Royale II: Revenge" instead of "Requiem"); a direct-to-video release was originally scheduled for September, but has since been postponed, which may mean Fukasaku is making headway in his efforts. By the way, the original cut of BRII has just been released in region-free form in Korea, so Americans can import this version and watch their government get vilified clumsily on their Region 1 DVD payers. Oh, and the big news: the original movie and novel is currently being remade in this hemisphere as "Sangre Fría" ("Cold Blood"), a 13-part TV miniseries scheduled to air next month on the Telefe network in Argentina. The official synopsis of the series makes it sound like it's a traditional slasher, but I think it's because the producers are making an attempt to make the actual premise a surprise. The series transplants the BR program from an island in Japan to the mountains of Patagonia, and instead of ninth graders, the participants are students at a prestigious university (so the cast is obviously much older, consisting of Argentinian soap regulars and some faces from Argentinian indie cinema)...so I don't anticipate anything being recognizable from the original except for the basic premise. I don't know if and when I'll be able to see this series when it airs, but many people in the States with C-band satellite dishes and those with DirecTV's Spanish channel lineup will be able to tune into the Telefe network and watch it. [...] Battle Royale ist nicht so gut wie der erste Teil, aber er ist auch nicht viel schlechter - auf seine eigene Art und Weise. Wer Kriegsfilme mag und am ersten Teil Gefallen fand, wird auch mit Battle Royale II zufrieden sein.
