[03.02.2011] CS! meldet...
Following Sunday's news that Jordana Brewster will join the cast of the upcoming "Dallas" series comes studio confirmation that Josh Henderson ("Desperate Housewives") will be part of the TNT show as well.
Written by Cynthia Cidre and Warner Horizon, the new show "centers on feuding cousins John Ross and Christopher, the offspring of brothers J.R. and Bobby Ewing, as they clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty."
According to the official reports, Josh Henderson will play John Ross and Brewster, Elena, who is involved in a love triangle between John Ross and Christopher (whose casting is still unnannounced).
Original stars Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray are set for the series as well, reprising their original roles from the long-running (1978-1991) show.

[30.01.2011] TVline meldet...
TNT’s Dallas reboot has made its first official hire: Jordana Brewster has snagged a lead role in the high-profile pilot.
The project - written by Cynthia Cidre and Warner Horizon - centers on feuding cousins John Ross and Christopher, the offspring of brothers J.R. and Bobby Ewing, as they clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty. Brewster will play Elena, the gorgeous daughter of the ranch’s cook who is locked in a love triangle with Christopher and John.
Brewster joins Dallas alums Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy, who are set to reprise their roles from the original series as Sue Ellen and Bobby, respectively. After months of negotiations, fellow Dallas vet Larry Hagman, who played the Machiavellian J.R., has verbally committed to the project but has yet to sign a deal. Hagman had been holding out for money, prompting the studio and the network to come up with an alternative pilot script in which Hagman’s J.R. is only represented through flashbacks from the original series. [...]

[07.12.2009] THR.com meldet...
Cynthia Cidre has been tapped to write TNT's new take on "Dallas," the first major development for the project that had been rumored for a couple of months.
The network and Warner Horizon, which is producing the series, are refusing to discuss its story line.
The initial idea was to have the series revolve around J.R. and Sue Ellen's son John Ross and Bobby and Pam's adopted son Christopher, but the studio and the network are waiting for Cidre's take on the Ewing clan and want to read her script before making a decision.
Patrick Duffy, who played Bobby in the original series, Larry Hagman (J.R.) and Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) were approached two months ago about potentially reprising their roles. There are no talks between the actors and Warner Horizon, and a rep for the studio said the three "may or may not be part of" the new series.
"Dallas," which premiered in 1978, was one of television's most successful primetime soaps and ran for 13 seasons on CBS.
Warner Bros. TV has the TV rights to "Dallas" through the 1989 acquisition of series producer Lorimar Television. Feature rights are owned by New Regency, which has been trying to mount a feature remake for the past several years. [...]

[18.12.2007] PageSix.com meldet...
JOHN Travolta has been dropped from the "Dallas" movie after being promoted as the project's anchor for more than two years. Insiders tell Page Six that Travolta, who was just nominated for a Golden Globe for donning a fat suit for his drag role in "Hairspray," was "let go about two weeks ago. He had the role of J.R. Ewing taken from him and given to Ben Stiller." However, a rep for Stiller denies the comic actor accepted or was offered the part. "John was given a nice seven-figure 'gift' to go away quietly," our source added. "He also got five family members roles in the movie, and they aren't going to be in it now, either." A friend of Travolta confirmed, "He is not doing the movie. They've gone a different direction than was originally intended. I don't know about any 'gift,' and I don't think the family member thing is correct." A rep for Travolta declined to comment. This is just the latest chapter in the troubled "Dallas" saga. The first big upheaval occurred last year when Shirley MacLaine (who was to play Miss Ellie), Luke Wilson (Bobby Ewing) and Jennifer Lopez (Sue Ellen) were dropped from the cast. Meg Ryan and Matthew McConaughey's names were then brought up, but neither was signed. Director Robert Luketic was also let go in favor of "Bend It Like Beckham" helmer Gurinder Chadha, and the budget was downsized from an original $65 million to "something way less," the source said. Producers may be looking for a Stiller-like talent to take Travolta's role because the word is that "Dallas" will now - if it ever gets made - be a "comedic, behind-the-scenes" movie instead of the originally intended drama. The change was made last year after distributor 20th Century Fox conducted focus groups on "Dallas" with small Midwestern audiences. Producers decided the picture needed "more laughs" and called for an entirely new, slapstick script and was rewritten as "a 'show-within-a-show' comedy," like the Nicole Kidman bomb "Bewitched." A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox declined to comment.

[25.08.2007] Variety meldet...
Regency and 20th Century Fox are overhauling the bigscreen adaptation of TV series "Dallas," about the oil-rich Ewing clan, and this time they're drilling for laughs.
Betty Thomas, the director who mined two spoof movie hits from "The Brady Bunch," is in discussions to direct. Pam Brady, who most recently scripted "Hot Rod," is penning the script.
John Travolta remains attached to play slimy oil tycoon J.R. Ewing.
When the movie was derailed late last year, Gurinder Chadha ("Bend It Like Beckham") was directing. Luke Wilson was attached to play Bobby Ewing with Shirley MacLaine to play Miss Ellie, while producers were talking with Meg Ryan to play Sue Ellen after Jennifer Lopez dropped out.
The budget for the comic "Dallas" should be lower than the projected $65 million for the straight-faced version.
There is also hope that a comedy about the dysfunctional Ewings will appeal to a younger audience, which has become a Regency priority. Studio is eyeing a January start date.

[16.11.2006] Moviehole meldet...
According to Starpulse and Dark Horizons, the "Dallas" film is still happening: but it’s going to be a mere shade on the film that was set to get up this year; and didn’t.
Not only has the film’s mega-star cast been dumped (including Shirley MacLaine and Jennifer Lopez), but Robert Harling’s script has also been put through the paper shredder. Because it was the best element of the whole project, that wile evoke many an ‘eh?’
Apparently, "Dallas" is going to get an overhaul - a "Bewitched" like overhaul, meaning that the film will now be an out-and-out comedy that will go the ‘show within a show’ route that the Will Ferrell/Nicole Kidman dud so fruitlessly utilised.
According to The New York Post, Harling’s script was conceived as an "amazing drama". Now, reportedly as the result of focus groups, a comedy script has taken its place. One source blatantly told Page Six, "the script totally sucks."
John Travolta is the only cast member still attached to the film - he’ll play J.R - which isn’t really surprising, considering he seems to follow the smell of shit like a pooch on a walk.
Filming is 'expected' to start in January.

[13.10.2006] Moviehole meldet...
Sounds like "Dallas" is going be the perfect fodder for one of those critic-penned books on films stuck in ‘development hell’.
Today, and mind you after a year or two or coaxing the cast, the trades confirmed that they’ve sacked the entire cast - sans John Travolta. Someone may as well have gone and taken a steamy one of the producers’ doorstep - because this smells just as funny. It really does.
The film - which Gurinder Chadha is still attached to direct - was set to start shooting in November, but its balloon has just been popped. The cast - including Luke Wilson (who had a nice pay-or-play deal - meaning, he gets paid anyway), Katie Cassidy and Shirley MacLaine - have all been given their pink slips.
Meg Ryan was in talks to replace Jennifer Lopez as Sue-Ellen in the film, but those talks have reportedly broken down too.
Besides director Chadra ("Bend it Like Beckham") Travolta, set to play J.R Ewing, remains the only original party member onboard the boat. So the question one must ask is : ‘Did you, John, have something to do with the removal of your co-stars? Did someone bring up those ‘Caught kissing a man as he was boarding a plane’ reports, perhaps?
More to the point... You know what this mean? Another fuckin’ opportunity for Jessica Simpson to try and convince the producers - who she has already tested for twice for the part - that she’s the right girl to play Lucy Ewing.

[29.06.2006] Moviehole meldet...
According to TV.com, rising newcomer Katie Cassidy (she’s the foxy blonde that play’s Adam Sandler’s grown-up daughter in "Click") has beaten both Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson to the much-coveted role of Lucy Ewing in the TV-to-film transfer, "Dallas".
Quoting US Weekly magazine, an insider - usually a guy in the mailroom whose using a butter knife to carefully open studio mail - stated that Jennifer Lopez, who’ll play in Sue-Ellen in the film, was dead-set against having a Lohan or a Simpson in the film: "Jennifer doesn’t want a diva on the set." [...]

[07.04.2006] CS! meldet...
Bend It Like Beckham helmer Gurinder Chadha is close to signing a deal to direct 20th Century Fox and New Regency's big screen version of Dallas, reports Variety. She replaces Robert Luketic, who fell off the project over creative issues.
Jennifer Lopez, Luke Wilson, John Travolta and Shirley MacLaine will star.
The script was written by Robert Harling, with drafts by Sacha Gervasi. Series creator David Jacobs is producing the film with Michael Costigan. [...]

[31.03.2006] Moviehole meldet...
[...] Apparently Australian director Robert Luketic has quit the "Dallas" movie. Why? Seems he wasn’t very happy with who has been cast in the film.
It’s hard to single-out which cast member, or cast members, Luketic ("Legally Blonde") didn’t fancy for the film, but we can assume. I know that Luketic personally approved John Travolta as J.R, and Jennifer Lopez as Sue-Ellen, but I’m guessing he wasn’t so crash hot on possibly Owen Wilson and/or Shirley MacLaine. Most likely, it’s the latter - I believe he was pretty keen to cast Jane Fonda (who, like Lopez, he worked with on "Monster-In-Law") in that role. It wouldn’t help, of course, that the studio is pushing for Jessica Simpson to play Lucy. That’d have any half-intelligent filmmaker running for the nearest cliff top.
Speculation was rife last week, that Luketic was possibly off "Dallas", when it was announced that he’d agreed to direct a new Las Vegas-set movie called "21".

[15.03.2006] CS! meldet...
Variety says director Robert Luketic is rounding up his cast for Fox's Dallas, the updated take on the classic '80s series.
Luketic has offered his Monster-in-Law star Jennifer Lopez the part of Sue Ellen Ewing, Luke Wilson is negotiating to play Bobby Ewing, John Travolta has an offer to star as J.R. Ewing and Shirley MacLaine is down for the part of Miss Ellie Ewing.
While no deals are yet in place for these actors - Wilson is in negotiations - most of the pacts are likely to happen. And if that package does come to fruition, production is likely to commence in October after Travolta has finished up a starring role in New Line Cinema's big screen version of Broadway hit Hairspray.
Robert Harling and Sacha Gervasi wrote drafts of the script.

[29.09.2005] Moviehole meldet...
Sounds like some offers have started to go out in little yellow envelopes from the "Dallas" production office.
According to Variety, some big names are being sought for the lead roles in the film version of the popular TV series, being directed by Australia's Robert Luketic.
Mel Gibson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jane Fonda are just three of the actors close to scoring roles in the soapy turned silver-screen blockbuster.
Up for the role of J.R Ewing are Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones and the abovementioned Gibson. Gibson, whose a little picky these days with what he does, is one of the only guns not to have shown reluctance, so sounds like he's in with a chance.
Catherine Zeta-Jones is the leading candidate to play Sue-Ellen, though Demi Moore and Jennifer Lopez are also semi-interested in the role.
Owen Wilson and Matthew McConaughey are being eyeballed to play the role of Bobby Ewing.
For the role of Pamela - Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon are the faves, whilst for Lucy, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore are believed to be on the wish-list.
Jane Fonda is being touted for the role of Miss Ellie. Considering director Luketic worked well with Fonda on the recent "Monster-In-Law", there's a good chance she'll sign something soon in this regard.

[14.07.2005] Moviehole sprach mit dem Regisseur Robert Luketic...
[...] "Robert Harling, who did Steel Magnolias, is writing that and I’m flying to Cape Cod when I get back (from the promotional tour in Australia) to see where he’s up to."
Luketic says he hired Harling to write the film because he believes he’s got what it takes to make it a unique picture and not simply another junky retool of an old TV show.
"TV shows that are [either] just a bunch of action sequences put together or some stupid high-concept 80’s thing, and they really drive me crazy", he says. "This is a creative story, characters and narrative. It’s politics, it’s greed, it’s family, and it’s corruption - just incredible."
Luketic says he has even met some real life Ewing’s. "We researched these families that are in Dallas. They have wealth beyond your wildest imagination - these people own nuclear power plants, they run their own healthcare facilities in small countries, [and] in one family - each of the children have jets, right outside the house. We don’t know who these people are, and this is my Dallas."
Still, those that watched the unforgettable soapie won’t be alienated. "It’s a delicate balance. We have an audience that love these iconic characters. We can’t fuck with that too much. What we can do though, is be innovative with the plot, the scheming, and with the things that this family does. We’re also making it accessible for people who know nothing about Dallas", he says, adding that the first part of the movie will summarise how the war between the Ewing’s and the Barnes’s started. "It’s not about who shot J.R? It’s about meeting this family - and going for a ride".
Luketic says although it won’t be a flat-out comedy, it’s unavoidable that the film will encompass some comedic elements. "It’s so outrageous in the wealth and the excess that one can not help but laugh", he says. "[But] These people are going to play the screenplay straight".
There’s been an abundance of casting rumours - most recently, John Travolta as J.R Ewing - but Luketic remains tight lipped on whom they’re looking at to fill the key roles. "I’m not allowed to comment on anything to do with casting on Dallas. I can’t even deny [that rumour]. It’s going to be a big cast. Big."
He can corroborate though, that filming will indeed take place in Dallas, Texas. "We’re going to build the new Southport, we’re going to build runways besides the house and applying for permits with the FAA so we can build a temporary tower so we can get Boeing 747’s in".
All of the main characters will have their own planes, by the sounds. "J.R has a BBJ (Boeing Business Jet), so does Jock, Bobby has a G5 - all the kids have G5’s except Sue-Ellen who has an old lead jet, which she complains about because it makes a funny noise, and she asks J.R for a new one."

[05.07.2005] CS! meldet...
Scooper 'Cool Cucumber' sent in this unconfirmed bit about possible casting for the Dallas feature, to be directed by Robert Luketic at Regency Enterprises. Robert Harling (Steel Magnolias) wrote the screenplay.
John Travolta was on The Big Breaky here on TV this morning. He did some stuff for Live-8. Talked mainly about that, but also some of his movies.
He's just done a movie with James Gandolfini called "Lonely Hearts" and he hinted that he may be playing 'A man with a mighty big hat' in a "Dallas" movie. I guess he just confirmed rumors that he's playing JR in the Dallas flick? They didn't push for anymore, just made an "ooohh" sound. [...]

[26.03.2005] CS! meldet...
Reuters caught up with screenwriter Robert Harling who adapted Dallas for director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde, Monster-in-Law). Here are a few interesting clips from the interview:
"It's reinventing the Ewing family as if they existed now in 2006 when the movie comes out," Harling said, explaining that he did not follow the plots developed over more than a decade in the series, though fans will recognize some things.
"In this story Bobby and Pam meet, fall in love and get married, J.R. and Sue Ellen are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and we have the patriarch Jock and the matriarch Miss Ellie."
"These characters are outrageous -- one of things I told the studio is I'd like to do 'Dallas on acid,"' Harling said, promising humor, glamour, cliff-hangers and suspense.

[14.10.2004] HollywoodReporter.com meldet...
Robert Luketic is in negotiations to direct the big-screen version of the hit TV show "Dallas" for Regency Enterprises. Michael Costigan and the TV series' creator David Jacobs are producing, with Peter Cramer overseeing for Regency. Robert Harling, whose credits include 1989's "Steel Magnolias," wrote the screenplay. The long-running primetime soap about a wealthy Texas oil family originally ran on CBS from 1978-91. "Dallas" joins such TV titles as "Charlie's Angels," "I Spy" and the upcoming "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Bewitched" in getting big-screen makeovers. Luketic is in postproduction on New Line Cinema's "Monster-in-Law," starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, which will be released next year. He also has directed "Win a Date With Ted Hamilton!" and "Legally Blonde." [...]

[31.10.2003] TV Guide meldet...
[...] Plans for the Dallas movie were announced last year, in the wake of the Enron scandal. Hey, the 1978-91 sudser was all about oil empires and their shady corporate intrigues! So it's a natural time to think of a revival. Of course, it's unsurprising that series creator David Jacobs wouldn't ask the original Ewing players to reprise their roles on the big screen. (Ahem. We're none of us as young as we used to be, right?) Still, it seems inevitable that Hagman will be approached to do a cameo. If it happens, might he say yes?
"No, I don't think so," the 72-year-old TV vet laughs. "I mean, if it was a couple of million bucks, I might. I'm a whore, like everybody else! I'd sell out for the right money. But I don't think so."
How amusing to find Hagman's as cynical about cash as J.R. Ewing, who believed every man had his price. Speaking of J.R., whom would he cast to play his wicked alter ego? "They've been talking about Bruce Willis, which I think would be a good idea," Hagman says. "He's a wonderful actor. They were talking about a whole bunch of people, but I don't envy whoever plays it. It's a hard character to improve on! [...]

[27.06.2003] Spiegel Online schrieb vor ein paar Tagen...

[15.11.2002] DH meldet, dass John Travolta (u.a. "Pulp Fiction") in der Verfilmung - gerüchteweise - in die Rolle von J.R. Ewing schlüpfen wird...

[10.10.2002] CS! meldet...
According to Variety, Regency Enterprises will turn the primetime soap opera Dallas into a feature film. Original show creator Dave Jacobs is on board to produce along with former Sony Pictures Entertainment executive vice president Michael Costigan (Charlie's Angels). No writer is yet attached.
"I like the idea of doing it for the 21st century, with a new cast," Jacobs told the trade. "We've got a new take on it. It's a much bigger canvas today and it belongs up on the big screen. Before people would have been interested in who is screwing each other. Now it's the national crimes that are affecting everyone. The conflict is still about family conflicts, but the stakes are higher now. That's the thing that excites me about it."
"Dallas," which ran on CBS from 1978 to 1992 and was produced by Lorimar, was ranked either first or second for five straight years in the early 1980s. The famous "Who Shot J.R.?" episode garnered one of the highest ratings for a series in history of TV. Show, which is still running in syndication in many countries, has revenues of more than $1.3 billion.
