[22.10.2010] Vulture meldet...
[...] The Shield creator Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Clancy's 1993 best-seller Without Remorse at Paramount Pictures, which insiders familiar with the situation tell us will be produced by Star Trek writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and the studio’s newest co-financier, David Ellison's Skydance Productions.
While Ryan is still best known for The Shield, he’s also executive producing the critically praised new F/X series Terriers, about an ex-cop and a former criminal who go into business together as private investigators. And as in Terriers, there are plenty of black-bag operations in Without Remorse: The book follows one of Clancy's recurring characters, John Kelly (who later assumes the alias of John Clark, and appears in the Jack Ryan novels like Patriot Games and Rainbow Six), as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend. While the book is set in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, insiders tell us there's no definitive plan to make the film a "period" piece.
In fact, Paramount has been straying from orthodox interpretation of the Clancy canon late: Back in August, Vulture was first to report that Paramount had hired Lost director and executive producer Jack Bender to reboot its dormant Jack Ryan franchise in a thriller not tied to any specific Tom Clancy title. And this week, it became clear why: News broke Monday that Paramount had sold the distribution rights to Marvel properties The Avengers (due in May 2012) and Iron Man 3 (May 2013) to Walt Disney Pictures for just $115 million. Without Remorse had been kicking around for years at Paramount, but now that Marvel's big titles have vanished, there's a big push to create more in-house franchises.

[20.09.2010] Heat Vision meldet...
Screenwriter Anthony Peckham has been tapped to work on Paramount’s Jack Ryan spy thriller.
Chris Pine is attached to star as Ryan, Tom Clancy’s intelligence officer-turned-action hero, and Jack Bender ("Lost") is attached to direct. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are producing.
The studio is hoping to reboot the Clancy franchise, which has made $787 million worldwide through the course of four movies, and is developing the movie to tell the story of Ryan’s early career. The story is set in Russia, with terrorist acts as a backdrop.
The studio hopes to begin shooting this year or early next year and is hiring Peckham to prep the project for take-off.
Adam Cozad previously worked on the script.
Peckham wrote "Invictus," the film that centered on Nelson Mandela’s involvement in the 1995 World Cup rugby championships and directed by Clint Eastwood, winning the WGA’s Paul Selvin Award. He also developed a name in the action field, with Warner Bros. hiring him to write "Sherlock Holmes" and "The Book of Eli." [...]

[13.04.2010] Bei Pajiba gibt es den letzten Stand mit neuen Infos zum kommenden "Jack Ryan"-Film...
We haven’t heard a lot about the next Jack Ryan film in the last few months, not since Chris Pine officially signed on to take over the role held by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford, and Alec Baldwin before him. The last we heard about the project was that a largely unknown screenwriter, Adam Cozad, had stepped in to do a rewrite of Hossein Amini’s original draft. In December, producer Mace Neufield revealed only that it was not an origins story, it would not be based on a Tom Clancy novel, and that, in reference to the movie’s starting point, "We pick him up while he’s on Wall Street."
Our insider source has just provided several more details which align well and expand on what had previously been reported. The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy.
After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.
There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on here, but what’s most interesting is how closely the Jack Ryan script resembles Dubai, which was Adam Cozen’s first script deal - he sold it to Lorenzo Di Bonaventura back in 2007 (Di Bonaventura is a producer on the Jack Ryan film). Eric Bana had at one been attached to produce Dubai (and perhaps star), but it looks that now many of the elements from that script have been co-opted for the Jack Ryan flick (and Bana has since left the Dubai project). For instance, Dubai is about an American economist who moves to Dubai an uncovers a terrorist plot to cover a huge drop in the value of the U.S. dollar, leading to mass starvation. The Dubai script is also essentially a chase movie, which is what the Jack Ryan movie sounds like, as well.
Moreover, the title that Paramount is currently working on has some similarities to Dubai, too - a one word, city title. The new Jack Ryan movie is tentatively called Moscow, a shorter, sleeker title than the previous four versions. And we also now know that the young Chris Pine version of Jack Ryan will have a wife, opening up all sorts of possibilities for casting (Ryan’s wife had been previously played by Anne Archer and Bridget Moynihan).
It sounds like a solid blending of the old Jack Ryan into a more modern world: Gone is the Cold War. In it’s place: Economic terrorism. [...]

[05.12.2009] Bei CS! meldet, gibt es neue Infos zum kommenden "Jack Ryan"-Film...
Producer Mace Neufeld spoke this morning at the Invictus press conference where he also updated the status of the next Jack Ryan film, set to star Chris Pine.
Neufeld confirmed that the new as-of-yet-untitled project will not be based on a Tom Clancy novel but will, instead, be an original screenplay.
The character of Jack Ryan has previously appeared in the Clancy adaptations The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears, the latter of which represented a previous attempt to reboot the franchise with a younger actor in the lead. Neufeld says that, while the plan is still to skew young with the casting of Pine, the story will not be an "origin story."
"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," says Neufeld, "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."
The first draft has been completed by Hossein Amini and a rewrite by Adam Cozad is set to start soon.

[14.10.2009] Wie Variety.com meldet, gibt es einen neuen Kandidaten für die Rolle des Jack Ryan...
Paramount Pictures is negotiating with Chris Pine to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan in the reboot of the franchise based on the Tom Clancy novels.
Pine is positioned to topline his second Par franchise. He played James T. Kirk in "Star Trek," the J.J. Abrams-directed summer hit, and will reprise the role in the sequel.
Pine is separately in talks to team with director D.J. Caruso in the Paramount drama "The Art of Making Money," early next year.
Talks have just started, but Pine is expected to come aboard the Jack Ryan film as the project is still taking shape. The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept.
They are still in deep development and it is unclear whether Pine would make another "Star Trek" before the Jack Ryan film. He will clearly be working often for Paramount over the next several years.
Pine, currently starring with Denzel Washington in the Tony Scott-directed "Unstoppable" for Fox, is vying to be the fourth actor to play Ryan, the CIA analyst in the Par film series.
Alec Baldwin originated the character in 1990's "The Hunt for Red October," Harrison Ford played him in 1992's "Patriot Games" and 1994's "Clear and Present Danger," and Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002's "The Sum of All Fears."
Pine’s repped by SDB Partners and Carrabino Management.

[07.07.2009] The Daily Beast berichtet über einen möglichen neuen "Jack Ryan"-Darsteller: George Clooney !?!
[...] Clooney also appears to be looking for his next commercial opportunity now that the Ocean's franchise seems to be played out. A source says he expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series. Clooney seems to recognize that at this time in the world and this time in his life (he's pushing 50), it's time for some commercial maintenance. [...]

[19.12.2008] THR.com berichtet über einen neuen "Jack Ryan"-Film...
Screenwriter Hossein Amini has been hired to tackle a new Jack Ryan movie for Paramount Pictures. The erstwhile intelligence analyst and all-American do-gooder created by novelist Tom Clancy has not appeared onscreen since 2002's "The Sum of All Fears."
Mace Neufeld and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura are producing the project for Paramount. "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi was on the hook to direct and produce a new Ryan installment, but his packed schedule made his involvement unworkable.
Other producer credits remain undecided. [...]
Amini is best known for his literary adaptations of Henry James, Thomas Hardy and Elmore Leonard. His new Ryan film is planned as an origin story, not derived from Clancy's novels and ultimately featuring a new, younger star.
The first onscreen Ryan adventure, "The Hunt for Red October," grossed $199 million worldwide in 1990 with Alec Baldwin in the role. "Patriot Games" (1992) and "Clear and Present Danger" (1994) brought in $178 million and $208 million worldwide, respectively, with Harrison Ford playing Ryan.
Ben Affleck took over the role in a sort-of prequel in "All Fears," which grossed $177 million worldwide.
Amini, repped by Endeavor, was nominated for an adapted screenplay Oscar in 1998 for "The Wings of the Dove." His other credits include "Jude" and "The Four Feathers." He has "Golden Compass" sequel adaptation "The Subtle Knife" in development at Warner Bros. and the Weinstein Co. drama "Shanghai" in postproduction.

[23.10.2008] MTV.com sprach kürzlich mit Regisseur Sam Raimi, der sich nun doch lieber um weitere "Spider-Man"-Filme kümmern möchte...
[...] as he explained, that doesn’t leave him any time to reboot Tom Clancy’s tale of America’s top CIA operative.
"I love Tom Clancy, and I hope they’d keep me in mind," Raimi shrugged, admitting that he couldn’t realistically make a Jack Ryan movie for half a decade or more. "But because I’m committed to ‘Spider-Man and making that picture, I think it’s going to knock me out of the running for the Jack Ryan picture."
This past March, Variety reported that Raimi and Paramount Pictures were in negotiations to have him direct not only a reboot, but possibly multiple sequels as well. These sequels would depict a young Ryan during a "Casino Royale"-like formative time in his career. It seems safe to assume, however, that most fanboys will be happy Raimi has instead decided to stick with the further tales of Peter Parker.
"I think [they’ll shoot] at the same time," Raimi explained, bowing out of the running. "But I love that character, and I know the movie will be great."

[29.05.2008] TheSun.co.uk sprach mit Harrison Ford...
[...] news that will no doubt please TOM CLANCY fans, he said Jack Ryan would be well worth bringing back.
He said: "The Ryan films, the Tom Clancy films were I thought worth re-exploring again but I wasn’t a huge fan of the book on which the last one was based.
"I thought it was more out of date than the others so I think they made a cracking good shot at it and I think BEN AFFLECK is a very very talented.
"I thought he did great and it was a fine movie but it wasn’t for me. But again, that’s a character that I think you could revisit acknowledging the passage of time and his increasing age.
"It wasn’t age dependent that character and his experiences were chockablock full of recipes for good engaging movies so that’s a character I wouldn’t mind revisiting."

[19.03.2008] Variety.com meldet...
Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with Sam Raimi to spearhead a franchise revival of Jack Ryan, the Tom Clancy-created CIA analyst character who drove four hit movies for the studio.
Raimi would develop and direct a series of films to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Raimi's Buckaroo Entertainment partner Josh Donen.
The intention is to generate several films Raimi would develop and direct, featuring Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted. One invention the studio is considering is to set the film in the present, with the action triggered by a global threat.
Par will draft a scribe to write a Ryan movie that Raimi would shoot after he completes the Universal horror film "Drag Me to Hell." Paramount wants the Ryan movie ready for release in summer 2010.
Ryan is the cerebral CIA analyst who climbed the political ladder and became an Everyman action hero star in a quartet of films spearheaded by producer Mace Neufeld. Alec Baldwin originated Ryan in 1990's "The Hunt for Red October" and when Baldwin famously jumped ship to do "A Streetcar Named Desire" on Broadway, Harrison Ford replaced him in 1992's "Patriot Games" and 1994's "Clear and Present Danger." Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002's "The Sum of All Fears." The four films grossed $781.5 million worldwide.
While Clancy is completing another Ryan novel, the studio hasn't read it and so hasn't decided if it will use the new book or come up with an original story. Paramount controls rights to the Ryan character, and gets first look at the new novel.
Raimi was drawn to the project because he loves the character. The studio was attracted by Raimi's skill in navigating a franchise, following a trio of "Spider-Man" blockbusters. Raimi is by no means out of the running to make more "Spider-Man" films, but he would have to direct the first film after "Drag Me to Hell" for the studio to make its 2010 release date.

[25.01.2008] CS! meldet...
Moviehole this morning reported that Fernando Meirelles, director of such acclaimed films as City of Men, The Constant Gardener and City of God, is the frontrunner to helm By Any Means Necessary, which may star Ryan Goslin (Lars and the Real Girl) as Tom Clancy's hero Jack Ryan, previously played by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck.
Brazilian website Cinema em Cena contacted Meirelles today and he confirmed that he is considering directing By Any Means Necessary. However, he said that he is not so sure about taking the job at the moment, because he is finishing Blindness and already has another project in development.
The story will not be based on a Clancy novel but will be an original script.

[21.01.2008] Moviehole meldet...
Philip Noyce himself tells us that neither he or Harrison Ford are returning to the Jack Ryan series - but a new Jack Ryan movie is in the works... and it'll star Ryan Gosling! (at least that's what the filmmaker's heard). Noyce WAS attached to direct "By Any Mean's Necessary", briefly last year, but he's no longer involved.
Though the new film won't be based on one of Tom Clancy's books, it'll still fix on a 'Young' Ryan (just as "The Sum of All Fears" did). [...]

[26.11.2006] Moviehole meldet...
Though he’s no longer involved in the series (though he wanted to do "Sum of All Fears", the studio had other ideas), Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce, who directed Jack Ryan pics "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger", tells Moviehole that he’s heard that the wheels are in motion to put C.I.A agent Ryan back on the big screen. But no, he won’t be involved - and from the sounds of it, neither will the man who invented the popular literary character.
According to Noyce, Paramount is looking to relaunch the Jack Ryan film series - a series that began with 1990’s "The Hunt for Red October" - only this time; the film won’t be based on one of Tom Clancy’s books.
You see, the studio has the right to make a film based on the character - but not John Clark, a character that appears in his own set of Clancy novels - without the permission of author, and so they’re going to come up with their own story for a new Ryan movie.
Originally, Paramount planned on using Clancy’s "Red Rabbit" as the stencil for the next Ryan movie - even attaching Ben Affleck to the film - but after tills failed to ring for "The Sum of All Fears", starring Affleck, they ditched the idea of a ‘young Ryan’ series and of the young actor carrying on with the role. It’s assumed this new Ryan movie will feature a new lead.
Clancy is still involved in the film versions of "Splinter Cell", "Without Remorse" and "Rainbow Six".
