Filmschoolrejects.com hat kürzlich eine Kritik zu einer Testvorführung des Films veröffentlicht... [...] What's really unique about The Mutant Chronicles is the look that comes together out of the effects choices and the production design. This is probably the first live action film in awhile to really take the idea of steam-punk and just go all out with it. We get steam-powered spaceships and the weapons let out bursts of steam when they fire, or at least a lot of smoke, and the world, despite being 2707, fights as if it were 1917. Gigantic artillery canons are used and the rifles, though looking wildly outdated, pack massive punches with fully automatic fire and explosive rounds. The different factions go at each other from trenches and still have to go 'over the top' and take the fight to the enemy. [...]
[...] does the movie have promise? The answer is yes, it does. It's not for everyone and might end up being a "love it or hate it" flick because of the style they go for, but there is definitely an audience out there for this. The crowd I saw it with was pretty vocal - when heads got slashed and faces got stabbed there were cheers and screams. A lot of ass gets kicked, and a lot of people die. The opening battle sequence is awesome. [...]
In summation, this is a pretty unique flick that packs in a lot of ass whooping. It's a guilty pleasure type film, mixing old school effects, a dystopic world, mutants, guns, and sort of a B-Movie Horror styled plot, but done up a notch. The flick also takes some very unexpected chances at various parts of the storyline, which caught me off guard, but they were welcomed moves. The film is currently looking for distribution and some companies are interested, at least two big ones according to producer Edward Pressman. If the film tightens up in places and goes in and fixes certain CGI effects (some explosions and blood splatters need some work), it could really end up being a fun and unique monster bashing party. Bei DH gibt es ein Interview mit Ron Perlman... Question: [...] What is Mutant Chronicles?
Perlman: Mutant Chronicles is a picture that is finished, but yet not finished. Because I guess there are enough problems with it. We're actually going to take it to Comic-Con and have a fan screening to sort of find out what is right and wrong with it. There's a huge amount of great work in it, particularly on the part of Simon Hunter, the director. And Thomas Jane and John Malkovich and I are incredibly proud of the picture, and we're going to do everything we can to help get it out to the marketplace. [...]

Bei AICN gibt es ein Teaser-Poster...
[21.05.2006]
Quint von AICN berichtet über die Vorproduktion... [...] After I arrived at Shepperton, I was led down David Lean Ave. (no shit... how cool is that?) and taken to meet the director of MUTANT CHRONICLES, a man by the name of Simon Hunter. I brought up the RPG and he was quick to assure me that I won't need to worry about long diatribes about how this certain kind of armor can take 3 hits from a plus 17 photon pistol wielded by a Mutant Commander or anything remotely like that. In fact, fans of the RPG might be a bit sad to hear that Simon's angle on the film has very little to do with the game. Simon liked the sci-fi war element and wanted to make a hardcore war flick with monsters.
He even went as far as saying he wanted it to be SAVING PRIVATE RYAN meets PITCH BLACK. I like that combo. Movies like THE GUNS OF NAVERONE and THE DIRTY DOZEN were also brought up. Apparently, Thomas Jane's character heads up a team to go behind the Mutant lines and take out something very important, all suicide mission-like. So, it's a sci-fi men on a mission flick. That's also promising.
Apparently, Steve Norrington was developing this flick back in '95 and my understanding is this iteration is just as different from his take as it is from the original card game.
The future world they're planning is very dark and gritty. There is nothing shiny in this world. Think BLADE RUNNER. The idea is all these futuristic flying machines and buildings are all still steam and coal-fueled, so everything has a sort of turn of the century London blackness to it. The war in the film is planned on being very much a throwback to the muddy trench warfare of WW1 as well, an idea I quite like. The uniforms I saw were very much like those used in that era. [...]
