"Kaplan is a very highly trained, smart soldier, but he’s an even better computer expert. He’s seen action before, but always with a crack team around him. It’s when an operating mistake on his part costs team leader One his life that causes Kaplan to lose his nerve. The guilty shame he feels about not being the soldier he thought he was lays heavy on him as he tries to deal with the trauma of being responsible for his best friend’s death.
Colin Salmon (who plays One) and I worked out a back-story relationship for both our characters to make them as believable as possible. We decided we were in the army together and because he could hand pick his Umbrella Corporation team, he brought me into the organisation. One is Kaplan’s leader, friend and father figure. They hang out, drink together at weekends and know each other’s families. Kaplan finds courage in carrying on the mission as One would have wanted. It’s then his true colours and bravery re-emerge until Kaplan’s eleventh hour shock when the Licker creature plays a major part in his destiny."
