CS! meldet... Pacificor LLC announced today that it has retained William Morris Endeavor Entertainment to represent the company in the sale of all rights to the iconic "Terminator" franchise.
Included are rights to exploit the property for film, television, merchandise and multiplayer online games. In addition, WME has been retained to assist the Santa Barbara hedge fund in selecting and retaining key talent for the next sequel in the "Terminator" series. [...]
"'Terminator' is one of the most recognized global brands in entertainment, and will continue to excite new generations of fans," WME Chief Executive Ari Emanuel said. "We look forward to teaming with Pacificor to fully realize the value of this enduring property."
Added Pacificor Chief Executive Andrew B. Mitchell: "WME provides us with the creative expertise and strategy that will help us identify the right opportunities not only to maximize our investment, but to also make sure the 'Terminator' franchise continues to be treated with the care and respect its fans demand. We are excited to be working with them."

Wie CS! meldet, gab es eine überraschende Wendung in Sachen "Terminator"-Rechte... UPDATE: Sony Pictures and Lionsgate are now in talks with Pacificor to jointly take control of the property, considering Pacificor has no experience in film production or distribution.
Deadline Hollywood has learned that the Halcyon Holding Corp. has sold the "Terminator" rights not to Sony Pictures or Lionsgate, but to Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor for $29.5 million. What's interesting is that Halcyon has previously accused Pacificor of extortion, bribery, and fraud and demanded $30M in damages.
Halcyon will receive $5 million for every "Terminator" movie made from now on, as well as retains the revenue streams from the third and fourth "Terminator" movies. An arrangement also was made that the sale now wipes out the debt Halcyon owed to Pacificor and all the other creditors.
Back on May 9, 2007, rights to the "Terminator" series passed from producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar to the privately funded Halcyon for a reported $30 million. It was Pacificor that lent Halcyon the money to conclude the deal.

Wie Variety.com meldet, kommt Bewegung in die Versteigerung der "Terminator"-Rechte... Sony's joined Lionsgate in the bidding on the rights to the "Terminator" franchise.
The studio had no comment but a source close to the bidding confirmed that Sony submitted a bid Thursday, the final day for submitting offers.
Lionsgate stepped up last month as the first bidder for the rights to the "Terminator" franchise with a "stalking horse" or floor bid of $15 million and a 5% cut of future gross receipts.
Halcyon Group put the franchise up for sale in September-. The auction for the "Terminator" assets -- which include the rights to future "Terminator" pics, TV series, DVDs and merchandise -- will be held Monday at the offices of FTI Consulting in Los Angeles, followed by a bankruptcy court hearing two days later.
If Lionsgate doesn't win the auction, it will receive $750,000 as a breakup fee from the winning bidder.
"Terminator Salvation," the fourth film in the franchise, was produced by Halcyon with Warner Bros. handling domestic distribution and Sony taking international. It carried a production pricetag of about $200 million and took in $371 million worldwide.
Halcyon paid Mario Kassar $30 million for the "Terminator" rights in 2007, then filed for Chapter 11 as a result of a dispute with hedge fund Pacificor, which financed the purchase. At that point, Halcyon toppers Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek told the bankruptcy court that they valued the "Terminator" franchise above $70 million.

[06.12.2009]
Wie CS! meldet, hat McG noch lange nicht genug... ;-) Director McG participated in a BD-Live chat for the Terminator Salvation Blu-ray yesterday and said that he is still planning on directing the fifth and sixth "Terminator" movies.
We're not sure how he knows this considering that the Halcyon group just this week said that they expect their auction for the franchise rights to conclude by February 1st, which means that the current owners of "Terminator" won't have any say in upcoming films.
"Over the past few weeks, Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios," Halcyon said.
Also, "Salvation" didn't exactly earn big numbers at the box office. The movie carried a production budget of about $200 million, not counting advertising, and made only $371.4 million worldwide. That's $125.3 million domestically and $246 million internationally.

Wie CS! wird der Verkauf des "Terminator"-Franchise nun konkreter... The Financial Times is reporting that the rights to the "Terminator" franchise will be auctioned this month. The sale has reportedly sparked considerable interest because "Terminator" is a rare example of a blockbuster franchise not controlled by a big studio.
FT says several financial buyers have expressed interest in Terminator, including Platinum Equity, the Beverly Hills firm that owns Delphi, the auto parts maker.
All the big film studios have also registered interest in the rights, with Sony Pictures a leading contender.
Summit Entertainment, the company behind the "Twilight" series, is tracking the sale, as is Media Rights Capital, which produced Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno.
The rights are being sold by Halcyon, the production company behind Terminator Salvation. The auction does not cover earlier Terminator films. The rights will give the buyer to make new films, TV series and other spin-offs.

LATimes.com berichtet über einen möglichen Rechtewechsel für das "Terminator"-Franchise... The rights to the Terminator franchise are up for sale yet again.
Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, who acquired the science-fiction franchise in 2007 for $25 million and produced this year's sequel "Terminator Salvation," are now looking to sell them partially or outright as several companies owned by the duo work their way through bankruptcy.
Anderson and Kubicek's Halcyon Holding Group has engaged financial advisory firm FTI Capital Advisors, pending bankruptcy court approval, to "evaluate strategic alternatives," according to a statement. Since Halcyon's only valuable asset is the Terminator rights, any deal would involve an investment in, or outright sale, of them.
"We're going to be contacting a variety of studios and independent companies," said Kevin Shultz, senior managing director at FTI. "We think the values are considerably in excess of the purchase price." [...]

CS! sprach mit Sam Worthington über die negativen Stimmen zu "Terminator Salvation"... [...] "It was dark, there is no humor. That is what we set out to do," he chuckled. "It's kind of humbling the way they've described your performance against Christian's, but we have no control over that. We just have try and do the best character we can do at that time. I can nitpick with the best of them, man, and go down the list of things I saw on IMDb where they found holes in it and go, 'You ARE f*cking right. If there was a big ten-ton robot coming outside that gas station, surely we would f*cking hear it!' And I missed that! So I go, 'I gotta be a bit better when I'm looking through my scripts!' So that kind of raises my games a bit, 'cause I feel like an idiot for not saying it to McG." (Worthington's delivery of this last bit had the entire group laughing.) [...]

IESB sprach mit Regisseur McG, u.a. über "Terminator 5"... McG: Yeah. I'm prepping 20,000 Leagues, every day, but I'm concurrently prepping Terminator 5, another Terminator picture. So, we're cooking that up. And then, I'm very active in Spring Awakening, the musical, also. So, we'll see. But, my focus, right now, is really pushing forward with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
IESB: Do you want to take time off between Terminator films?
McG: It's interesting. Obviously, Michael Bay had tremendous success following Transformers, in a very short window. Sometimes people like to take time off, but I'm excited about the next installation of the story, in the Terminator idea.
So, for me, it's terribly exciting to get back out there and show a different face of that idea, and perhaps get out of the apocalyptic world and into a contemporary world. I think the audience is going to be very excited about our way in. I haven't talked to anybody about that yet. You're the first one.
IESB: Do you listen to fan criticism, or is that just too much information?
McG: No, I listen to everything. It's interesting because a lot of people don't like me, but a lot of people just don't like my name. I can't take that too seriously because that's been my name my whole life. It's not something that I prescribed myself. So, I just gotta roll forward and, hopefully, have the films do the talking.
You take your lumps, if they don't like it, and you enjoy it a lot more when they do. We've all been on every side of that, and what can you do, but figure out what you did right and what you did wrong, look at it a little more closely, study the people that you look up to, and continue to evolve as a storyteller.

AICN berichtet über eine Q&A-Session mit James Cameron... - [...] He did take a non-Avatar question when someone asked about "having other people take over franchises that you created." He got a huge laugh when he cut to the chase and said, "oh Terminator?" He then said that he basically traded the rights for Terminator for a directing career and then when Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to do T3, his heart just wasn’t in it, though he had a few ideas. He said the producers "ran off with the rights, which caused some bad blood" and so when Arnold asked him after they were going in a different direction, Cameron told him, "just do me one thing - ask for more money than anyone ever has." Arnold said, "reeeeealllly?" He said, "yes. Because what idiots would make a Terminator movie without you?" Which seemed like a direct jab at Terminator Salvation even though he was talking about T3. The audience roared accordingly. [...]

McG, director of Terminator: Salvation, is working with Halcyon Co. to develop a fifth story for the Terminator franchise. There’s no word yet if he plans to have Destiny’s Child do a big dance number for the opening credits.
Halcyon Co., who acquired the rights to the Terminator story from C2 last year, envisions the re-boot as a trilogy. This looks like something that definitely could happen since Christian Bale has signed on for all three chapters.
Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, who head up Halcyon, wanted to wait until after this Summer’s release of Terminator: Salvation to decide where to go with the next film. But the buzz surrounding the 4th film got the wheels spinning a bit in advance. "We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this," Kubicek said.
The fifth Terminator film is currently slated to be released in 2011. [...]

[25.05.2009]
CHUD widmet sich der Frage, was mit "Terminator: Salvation" schief gelaufen ist... SPOILER !!! Und Variety.com berichtet über die US-Kinocharts... Twentieth Century Fox's sequel "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" won the domestic war against Warner Bros.' reboot "Terminator: Salvation" at the holiday box office.
"Museum 2" grossed an estimated $53.5 million from 4,096 theaters Friday through Sunday, while "T4" grossed an estimated $43 million from 3,530 runs. Opening Thursday to $13.4 million, "T4's" cume is $56.4 million.
Four-day totals for the long Memorial Day weekend won't be released until Monday. But even with Monday's grosses yet to be factored in, "Museum 2" appears to have the race sewn up.
Box observers had expected the contest between "Museum 2" and "T4" to be much closer, despite the fact that one is a family film, the other, a sci-fi actioner. [...]
In a not-so-good sign for "T4," "Museum 2" beat it on Friday. Fan-driven pics usually do better on Fridays, while family films do bigger business on Saturday and Sunday.
However, "T4's" five-day opening number should be in the vicinity of the five-day opening of "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," which clocked in at $68 million.
"T4"--directed by McG and toplining Christian Bale--was produced by Halcyon. Project was a negative pickup for Warners, which invested roughly $50 million in the reboot (not including marketing costs).
Sony, which is handling "T4" overseas, invested roughly $75 million. "T4" doesn't open at the international box office for another two weeks.
