"I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast," he said, referring to the Australian actor who plays Wolverine.
Singer said he enjoyed making science fiction and fantasy movies because they allowed him to discuss serious issues through entertainment. He said the "X-Men" series, which follows a group of mutants with superpowers who struggle to fit in with humans, is about tolerance and social structures.
He said he likes to "trick audiences into thinking they're seeing fireworks, but they're learning about themselves and listening to what I have to say."
"The excitement about working in science fiction and fantasy is - the stories, if they are good, are about the human condition," Singer said. [...]

Tim Pocock, who played the young Scott Summers/Cyclops in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has revealed that he will reprise the role in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: First Class.
"Currently shooting Australian TV series till February 2010...then X-men first class," he said on his Twitter account. "Wolverine" producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently hinted that a new "X-Men" movie would start production in 2010.
Written by Josh Schwartz, the film will likely draw from elements of the Marvel Comic of the same name, launched in 2006.

Christopher McQuarrie has signed on to write the script for Fox's sequel to its "Wolverine" movie.
Hugh Jackman is set to return as the Marvel Comics character, a mutant with healing powers and a skeleton laced with the indestructible metal known as adamantium. Jackman is also producing via his Fox-based Seed shingle along with Lauren Shuler Donner.
The movie's story line will take its cue from the early 1980s Chris Claremont/Frank Miller miniseries, which is set in Japan and features Wolverine dealing with ninjas as he struggles whether to follow his animal killer instincts or the life under a samurai's code of honor and respect.
The story line was hinted at in one of the movie's codas after the credits. (The other teased a spinoff based on Deadpool, the character played by Ryan Reynolds.)
The studio put a sequel in development after the movie, titled "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," carved up almost $180 million at the domestic boxoffice and $363 million worldwide.
McQuarrie is not unfamiliar with the character. The scribe, who won an Oscar for writing "The Usual Suspects" for Bryan Singer, reteamed with the director to write 2000's "X-Men." Though McQuarrie could have received a credit, he voluntarily took his name off the movie when the final version was more in line with David Hayter's script than his. [...]

[...] Offering an update of sorts for the sequel, Jackman told MTV News "Japan is where we're heading, [and] we're starting to work on it now. We're in the ... first steps of developing that story."
Reiterating his desire to Miller and Claremont's story arc brought to the screen, Jackman said he's "made no real secret" of his fondness for that particular chapter of Wolverine's history. "I think the fans love that saga. It's my favorite saga of the Wolverine stories."

Empire sprach mit Ryan Reynolds über das "Deadpool" Spinoff...
[...] There's a double dose of good news for fans of the Marvel mercenary. Reynolds says Deadpool will breach the fourth wall: "Break the fourth wall? Oh yeah, he’s got to. I want to see him break the Great Wall."
Confirming what he recently told HitFix, Reynolds emphasised that he and 20th Century Fox were working to ensure that Deadpool close sticks as closely as possible to the Marvel comic-book: "The studio's working on a script and trying to find a director. The main goal is to make sure it stays close to the source material."
So does Reynolds feel under pressure from fanboys? "I’m one of them. I’ve always been a fan, at least for the last eight or nine years. I feel a bit of validation because I knew going into Wolverine that there’s a huge fanbase for this and I don’t think anyone else did." [...]

With X-Men Origins: Wolverine having already pulled in $356.2 million worldwide, and both a sequel and Deadpool spin-off in the works, we were wondering what the status of the other "X-Men" spin-offs was.
Today, we got a chance to talk to David Goyer, who's executive producing ABC's upcoming "Flash Forward" and whose The Unborn hits DVD and Blu-ray on July 7. Goyer has been attached to write and direct Magneto, but he's not sure if that will move forward before X-Men: First Class.
"There have been some preliminary discussions," he told us about Magneto, adding, "I think, at Fox, they're trying to decide if making a young X-Men film makes the most sense next, does making a 'Magneto' make the most sense next. They're just trying to decide internally who's next up."
So it sounds like there's a face-off between Wolverine, Deadpool, Magneto and First Class at Fox right now. [...]

MTV sprach mit Ryan Reynolds über das "Deadpool" Spinoff...
[...] Currently, Reynolds and the studio are seeking a director and writer(s) for the film, and listening to plenty of ideas about where Wade’s story should go. Fortunately for the die-hard fans, Reynolds has no intention of letting the film stray too far from its comic origins.
"I get to be the authentication police, in a weird way," grinned Reynolds [...]. "To their credit - the studio’s credit - they want to make an authentic ‘Deadpool’ movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible."
With that in mind, the actor told us that he and the studio have already agreed to some key terms. "He’s going to be the Merc with the Mouth, [we’re going to give] all those answers that everyone wants," Reynolds explained. "He’s going to have the scarred-up face, he’s going to be in the suit - and, it’s going to be incredible."
So, as the actor and his studio begin assembling their team, Reynolds is bringing his "authentication police" skills to finding similar-minded people who can tell the fractured tale of the deadly mutant. "Right now, it’s just a question of trying to figure out what is the spine of the story," Ryan said of their current discussions. "Who is the villain? What does Wade and/or Deadpool want?"
"And how do you tell that story? Are we going to see flashbacks to his old life, flash-forwards, present-day?" an obviously enthusiastic Reynolds added. "We’re just trying to figure that stuff out." [...]

[...] The blog for the Los Angeles-based store Golden Apple Comics spotted one such actor when "Battlestar Galactica" star Katee Sackhoff went there to buy every single comic featuring Typhoid Mary she could get her hands on with "hopes to get a part for a marvel movie."
Comic fans will realize right away that Typhoid Mary is the longtime foe (and lover) of Marvel's Daredevil, a mutant with a multiple personality who develops various powers depending on which personality inhabits her at the time. She was created by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr., first appearing in their run with Daredevil #254.
That makes one wonder whether Marvel Studios are already looking into possibly relaunching Daredevil on the big screen, following the Mark Steven Johnson version starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, which came out in 2003. Natassia Malthe played Typhoid in the 2005 spin-off Elektra with Garner. Typhoid also appeared in the early "Deadpool" comics, so this might be for the Deadpool spin-off with Ryan Reynolds. [...]

20th Century Fox is developing a X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off featuring Deadpool, the wise-cracking mercenary played in the film by Ryan Reynolds, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Reynolds is attached to reprise the character for what for now is simply being called Deadpool. Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios would act as producers.
The project is currently out to writers.
The trade adds that the studio considered a Deadpool spin-off early in "Wolverine's" development process, which is why it cast Reynolds.
UPDATE: A source close to Fox tells us that the Deadpool and second "Wolverine" movies are coming from the two Easter Eggs at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine:
"We are developing a spinoff with Deadpool, as well. It is one of the two different "Easter egg" scenes after the credits of WOLVERINE and hints at two different movies that are coming FROM THEM. One is the Japan backstory which was announced earlier, the other is about Deadpool. The film, which would be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel, has Ryan Reynolds attached and would be a complete exploration of this unique character - his origins, his emergence as the Merc with with the Mouth, etc. We are looking for writers as well."

Donner says, "There are internal discussions" about a Gambit spin-off and "they are going to figure all that out."
What about bringing back X-MEN and X2 director Bryan Singer for another go around?
"Nothing would please me more than to bring Bryan [Singer] on for another movie. And, if it's like the first Deadpool or the first Gambit, I think, I mean, I hope he would be interested..."
Looks like the X-MEN franchise isn't going anywhere and still has a few tricks up her sleeve.

What interests you about First Class as a potential franchise?
Shuler Donner: I like kids. I did produce Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo's Fire. I do like those kind of teenage movies; I really do. Part of it takes me to my roots. It's action. There seems, to me, to be more humor, or more potential for humor. I really like that idea. The relationship ... I don't want to get into what the script is about, but it provides a bit of a lighter touch to the franchise. [...]

Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all three X-Men movies and the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine, said she hopes to make a franchise out of X-Men: First Class.
"It is the first class of Xavier's school, way back when, so it's young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that'll be really fun," Donner said. "I think (the plan) is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world.
"And hopefully First Class will become its own franchise and we can follow them as they grow up."

Variety.com berichtet über das Spin-Off "X-Men: First Class"...
Twentieth Century Fox is gearing up to continue its "X-Men" franchise with a younger set of mutants.
Studio has tapped "Gossip Girl" creator Josh Schwartz to write "X-Men: First Class."
Schwartz, the creator and exec producer of CW's teen sudser hit as well as Fox's youth-centric "The OC" and NBC's "Chuck," is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide.
Writing assignment has also included the possibility of directing the pic, but so far Schwartz has opted not to take the helm.
Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all three "X-Men" pics, as well as next summer's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," is producing "First Class" alongside "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" scribe Simon Kinberg.
Fox is keeping quiet on plans and declined to confirm details of the project. The studio has been considering ways to continue its successful series of "X-Men" movies after the third installment, the Brett Ratner-helmed "X-Men: The Last Stand," collected $459 million in 2006.
Fox has been leaning toward using the younger characters introduced in the previous pics in future installments -- teenagers with powers taught at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.
Resulting film would likely draw from elements of the Marvel comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics.
Given Hollywood's penchant for reboots with new actors playing familiar roles, pic could also reintroduce characters. Comicbook revolves around the Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, Angel and Professor X.
Naturally, "First Class" could also result in its own series of sequels.
Pic joins other "X-Men"-related projects already in the works at the studio. Fox is actively developing a standalone "Magneto" pic, as well as considering a "Deadpool" spinoff, based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in "Wolverine." Shuler Donner is producing "Magneto."
Regular slate of "X-Men" pics would provide Fox with a reliable series of movies that perform at the B.O. and not repeat a dismal summer sesh like the studio experienced this year.
Although Schwartz has enjoyed smallscreen success, he has yet to crack the world of film with a significant project. He wrote and is attached to direct the coming-of-age comedy "Looking for Alaska" for Paramount.
Tackling a new "X-Men" installment will likely give Schwartz instant credibility within the studio world.

And, as if to further confirm that, the industry bible Production Weekly has added a synopsis for the Fox film, which suggests that Xavier "was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps" in which Magneto is interred at the beginning of Bryan Singer’s X-Men.

CS/SHH!: What's the latest you can tell us about "Wolverine"?
Lauren Schuler Donner: May 1st, 2009! I guess it's closer to the first "X-Men" in tone because it's a little darker, but there's a lot of action. It's his origin story. It's really good. I've been in the editing room the last couple of weeks and I think that it's good and that audiences are going to like it. But it's a little darker.
CS/SHH!: How is Hugh Jackman's interpretation of the character different or new, compared to what we've seen in the "X-Men" films?
Schuler Donner: Well, you haven't seen this side of him. It's darker and sadder and it's kick-ass. There's a ton of action. It's really kick-ass.
CS/SHH!: How was working with Gavin Hood as the director?
Schuler Donner: It was fun. It was good. I like taking someone out of the indie world and bringing someone into the action world because it grounds the movie. It gives it a reality. It gives it an emotional core, and then you can have as much fun and action in it as you want.
CS/SHH!: This was Gavin's first time playing with really big cinematic toys. Was there a learning curve on that for him?
Schuler Donner: Yeah. He had a learning curve, but the thing basically for the director, honestly, it's sort of like, "Here's what I want..." and then the visual FX guys create that. Then it's like, "No. I want it more like this or like that." A director doesn't have to know how to do it. They have to know about lighting and shooting someone against green screen and that sort of stuff, but in terms of actually creating it, we do that.
CS/SHH!: And Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool.
Schuler Donner: Yes. Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool... he plays Wade Wilson.
CS/SHH!: Is that in hopes of a "Deadpool" spin-off film?
Schuler Donner: I hope so. I really hope so. He's so good at it.
CS/SHH!: Are there any comic book storylines in particular that the movie is drawing from?
Schuler Donner: There's an "X-Men: Origins" that some of it is pulled from, and then it's sort of an amalgamation of some of them. But "X-Men: Origins" sort of goes back into his young, young past, and we started there. [Note: Schuler Donner is referring to the 2001 Origin miniseries by Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove].
CS/SHH!: And is the Stan Lee cameo obligatory at this point, even though he didn't personally create Wolverine?
Schuler Donner: Well, we shot in Australia, and so we don't have a Stan.
CS/SHH!: Oh no... Maybe he can get placed in the background digitally?
Schuler Donner: Yeah, I know. Oh, you know what, we're doing some additional shooting in January and that's a good idea. I love Stan! [...]

An interesting listing at Production Weekly caught our eye - "X-Men: First Class." Could 20th Century Fox be developing a movie based on the series written by Jeff Parker and pencilled by Roger Cruz? Or are they using the title of that comic for their proposed Young X-Men spin-off?
What makes it even more interesting is that X-MenFirstClass.com redirects to FoxMovies.com.
The "X-Men: First Class" was an eight-issue mini-series published from September of 2006 through April of 2007. As Special was also released in May of 2007 followed by a monthly series that started in 2007 with the same creative team. The comic is described as follows:

After being the breakout character in three blockbuster mutant flicks, Logan will try and set a spin-off blueprint that could eventually yield a "Magneto" movie and more. "We are dealing with a character who is probably one of the darker comic book characters ever created," Jackman said of the flick, which co-stars Liev Schreiber, Dominic Monaghan and Ryan Reynolds. "The movie has a lot of fun elements, but there are layers of pain and darkness to this character."
"Tonally, I would put it more in the ‘Batman Begins’ sort of realm," he said, distancing the flick from past "X-Men" movies. "That’s sort of where we’re headed."
And if Jackman has his way, "Origins" won’t be the last time we see him wielding adamantium claws. "There are two conditions for me doing any more: One is will anybody want to see it, and the second is: Will I still have the passion for it?" he explained. THIRTEEN-year-old Perth boy Troye Mellet will play the young Hugh Jackman in his new X-Men movie, Wolverine.
The baby-faced lad won the role after YouTube videos of him singing caught the eye of Hollywood talent scouts.
Mellet was then asked to submit an audition tape - which won him the part.
The budding singer and actor performed solo on the past two Telethons and did a duet with Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian.

Last week, it was rumored that Michelle Monaghan was up for the role of Silver Fox in 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" spin-off, X-Men Origins: Wolverin, to be directed by Gavin Hood and starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
On Friday, we got a chance to talk to Monaghan on the set of her upcoming thriller, Eagle Eye, and she confirmed that she is up for the role.

Twentieth Century Fox is sinking its claws into May 1, 2009, for the release of Hugh Jackman starrer "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which director Gavin Hood begins shooting later this year.
"Wolverine" is expected to feature many other mutants -- some new to the film franchise and some from one or more of the three "X-Men" films. Liev Schreiber is reportedly in final talks to take on the role of a younger version of nemesis William Stryker, played by Brian Cox in "X2."
This is the first time a title has been confirmed for the next chapter in the lucrative film franchise, based on the Marvel comic strip. [...]
There's been much speculation about the spinoff, which gained speed when the studio finalized deals with Jackman (who reprises the role he played in the three "X-Men" pics), Hood and scribe David Benioff, who penned the script.

"Since I'm a guy who loves emotional complexity, it seemed to me that... when I was first approached to do it, my first thought was, 'What? Me? Do this? What is that? And of course, I then did some further research and I realized that the character of Wolverine, I think his great appeal lies in the fact that he's someone who in some ways, is filled with a great deal of self-loathing by his own nature and he's constantly at war with his own nature. The 73-year old McAlpine’s career has spanned nearly 4 decades in which he’s been nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Moulin Rouge!. Other credits include Clear and Present Danger, Predator, Mrs. Doubtfire, Peter Pan, and Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
In addition to a cinematographer, sources tell us that Kenny Myers, makeup artist on X-Men: The Last Stand and The Prestige, will once again be working on Hugh Jackman’s makeup for WOLVERINE. Myers has worked on such films as How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End, War of the Worlds and most recently Charlie Wilson’s War.
We’re also advised that director Gavin Hood and his crew were scouting additional locations in New Zealand this week.

Hugh Jackman’s big pre-strike effort "Wolverine" - the please-let-it-be-good prequel to "X-Men" - is eyeing off Australia as it’s possible filming location.
According to The Sunday Herald Sun, Jackman is taking meetings and signing cheques in an attempt to get the movie made down under. That way, I’m guessing, he can go straight from "Australia", which he’s shooting now, into ‘Wolverine’ - and if any ADR or re-shoot commitments pop up for the former, he can just drive down the road and get it done; no passport needed.
The Gavin Hood-directed movie, which chronicles the backstory of the only man on earth hairier than Robin Williams, is set to lens early next year.

Contrary to rumours that Brett Ratner ("X-Men : The Last Stand") had snagged the job, IESB reports that someone else has actually been offered the task of helming the comic spin-off, "Wolverine".
Its good news, too.
D.J Caruso, director of the smash hit "Disturbia", has been asked to help tell the origin of the hairy beast.
The only thing that may prevent the deal with Caruso going ahead is that Dreamworks - who produced "Disturbia" - are courting the filmmaker for another movie.
The back-up plan? Hire Len Wiseman ("Live Free or Die Hard") to do "Wolverine".
Either choice is fine... Because it’s not Brett Ratner.

Variety is reporting that David Goyer will direct Magneto, the "X-Men" spinoff in development from 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios that centers on the villain played in the original trilogy by Ian McKellen.
After the first three "X-Men" films grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, Fox and Marvel hatched the spinoff program. Magneto will be the second such movie to go into production. First up is Wolverine, a David Benioff-scripted film that will star Hugh Jackman as the steel-clawed mutant; Fox and Marvel will set a director shortly on that pic.
Goyer will develop a Magneto script that was written by Sheldon Turner.

WIZARD: [...] There’s a rumor swirling that you’re going to write and direct an "X-Men 4" movie. Care to comment?
WHEDON: I haven’t heard the rumor, but there is no rumor that is not swirling. I don’t even know, are they even going to have an "X4"? I had been talking with [Marvel Studios] about "X3," but the dates didn’t line up. So I took on "Wonder Woman," and that worked out great! Oh, no wait, I remember now, not so much.
Yeah, I haven’t heard anything about "X4." You know, the problem with the big superhero movies is there are so many hands [involved], but I really respect [Marvel Studios President of Production] Kevin Feige if they make something like that. You know they’re actually going to make it as opposed to something that’s in limbo. And you know I do love the characters. I wouldn’t say never. But right now, I’m interested in doing "Goners," which is my own thing, as opposed to somebody else’s. I find that doing someone else’s thing is not working out so well for me... anywhere but in the word of actual comics. [...]

Bei AICN gibt es nur wenig Neues zu "Wolverine"... ;-)

Brian Cox was on a BBC programme, Film 2007 talking about Running With Scissors, the presenter Jonathan Ross asked him about Wolverine to which Cox replied, 'it's set seventeen years ago, which is fine for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine doesn't age but for me, I'm thinking they could what they did with Patrick and Ian for the start of the third one. I know my character is in it, they've asked me to be in it but that was a while ago now, it's completely stalled so no start date as yet.' [...]
